A Better Stack alternative for people without an SRE team

Let's start with the concession: Better Stack is probably the most polished product in monitoring. If you run an engineering team with an on-call rotation, you should likely just use it.

This page is for the other kind of buyer — one founder, many apps, no rotation, no observability budget — comparing what each tool actually gives them.

stay with Better Stack if…
  • You have a team and need on-call rotations, escalation, and incident management.
  • You want logs, traces, and uptime in one platform.
  • You want phone-call alerts, or status pages with custom domains and subscribers.
  • Budget flexibility beats budget predictability for you.
Tell Me When Down

Uptime and security monitoring for people who'd rather ship than babysit servers. We watch so you can sleep.

pick tell me when down if…
  • You're one person running many projects and want one flat, boring bill.
  • You want security watched too — headers, DNS, spoofing, secrets, CVEs — not just uptime.
  • You run on Stripe, cron jobs, or Supabase and want those specifically watched.
  • You'd rather read plain English than SRE dashboards.

What Better Stack does better

A lot, honestly. On-call scheduling and escalation — their actual core business. Unlimited phone-call alerts.

Status pages nicer than ours: custom domains, subscriber notifications, deep branding. Log and trace ingestion, dashboards, an AI SRE feature.

And a free tier with ten monitors and three-minute checks that is genuinely hard to argue with.

If your needs run in any of those directions, Better Stack earns its reputation and you should use it.

What you get here that Better Stack doesn't have

Security, mainly — the half of "is my site okay?" that uptime tools skip.

Every monitored app gets a scheduled scan: security headers, DNS hygiene, SPF/DMARC spoofing protection, exposed secrets and .env probes, dependency CVEs from your repo.

Each finding is graded A to F and explained in plain English, with a copy-paste fix or a prompt to hand your AI assistant.

Plus Stripe webhook monitoring — which, as far as we can tell, no other monitoring product does at all.

And a pricing model designed to be predicted, not optimized: flat per app, every feature on every tier, no seats, no meters. You know your bill before the month starts.

Their free tier is great. Ours is too. Run both.

Paste a URL and uptime checks, heartbeats, and your first security scan start in about a minute. Two weeks side by side will tell you more than any comparison table.

Better Stack vs Tell Me When Down, answered

Is Better Stack overkill for a solo founder?

Often, yes — and that's not an insult, it's their positioning.

Better Stack is a genuinely excellent SRE platform: on-call rotations, escalation policies, log ingestion, incident management. A solo founder uses almost none of that.

You still navigate a product shaped around it, with à-la-carte pricing where on-call alone starts at $29 per seat.

If you are a team with a rotation, Better Stack is probably the right buy. If you're one person with ten projects, you're paying for scaffolding you'll never climb.

Does Better Stack include security scanning?

No. Like every uptime tool we compared, Better Stack monitors availability — it doesn't check your security posture beyond SSL expiry.

Tell Me When Down scans every monitored app on a schedule: security headers, DNS hygiene, SPF/DMARC email-spoofing protection, exposed secrets, and dependency CVEs from your repo.

Every finding is graded A to F with a plain-English fix.

Why do people complain about Better Stack billing?

The recurring theme in reviews is bill unpredictability. Uptime monitoring, logs, and on-call are separate products with separate meters, so the monthly total moves with usage and seats.

Tell Me When Down deliberately prices the boring way — a flat monthly number for a number of apps, every feature included. The bill never surprises you.

Is Tell Me When Down a good Better Stack alternative?

If you need on-call scheduling, phone-call alerts, or log management today, no — stay with Better Stack. Those are real products we don't have.

If what you actually use is uptime checks, heartbeats, status pages, and alerts, and you'd trade the SRE platform for security scanning, Stripe webhook monitoring, and a flat bill — that's precisely the trade we built.

How do the free tiers compare?

Better Stack's free tier is one of the strongest in monitoring: 10 monitors, 10 heartbeats, 3-minute checks, a status page, and Slack alerts.

Ours is 1 app — but that app gets everything: uptime from three regions with two-region confirmation, security scans, dependency CVE checks, heartbeats, Stripe webhook monitoring, a public status page, and alerts on email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, or webhooks.

Breadth versus depth. Run both free and see which one you check twice. (Facts checked July 17, 2026.)
